A 10 storey building, 13 thousand square meters of area, a panoramic terrace 35 meters high from where you can admire the city of Bordeaux and its famous vineyards. These are the facts of “La Cité du Vin”, the new museum dedicated to the world of wines and situated in the undisputed city of viticulture.

The complex designed by architects Anouk Legendre and Nicolas Desmazières was, inaugurated last June and aims to become one of the most popular tourist destinations. Its shape resembles a decanter but there are also those who have seen the shape of a bunch of grapes, the waves of the Garonne or the curve of the wine falling into a glass. The two designers actually admitted in an interview with ArchDaily that La Cite du Vin “does not actually resemble any recognisable shape or form because it wants to be an evocation of the soul of wine halfway between the river and the city”.

What has now been calle the “Guggenheim of wine” is a cross between a museum and a theme park. There are, in fact, 3 thousand square meters of exhibition rooms, a 250 seat auditorium, a two storey wine bar with 14,000 bottles of wine, a restaurant with a wine list of 500 wines, a tapas bar, a reading room and a huge gallery that will take you on a journey through the history of wine, from antiquity to the present day. Thanks to a simulator you can live a unique experience, accompanying a wine merchant to conquer new territories and discover grapes and vineyards.

The Cité du Vin will give you an original and engaging multi-sensory experience, which will enrich you culturally: however, be careful not to get too caught up in the shop that has wines from over 80 countries around the world. There is no risk, on the other hand for a post-tasting hangover as there are comfortable armchairs where you can sit and listen to famous songs about wine.

Italy is an important influence when it come to bubbles and flute. Italy, better known as “Bel Paese”, is a represented by the project partner to the Consortium for the Protection of Wine Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco.
